Spirit Yachts began in 1993, when yacht designers Sean McMillan and Mick Newman set out to build beautiful wooden yachts for modern sailing.
Today, from our yard on the River Orwell in Ipswich, we continue to design and build bespoke sailing yachts, motor yachts and superyachts by hand. Our work brings together traditional craftsmanship, modern design and the individual vision behind every Spirit.
By designing and building in-house, we offer a collaborative approach that facilitates creativity and communication. The journey of a new project involves you, the yacht’s owner (or representative), from start to finish.
After establishing criteria for the yacht, hand-drawn designs evolve into flawless 3D concepts using state-of-the-art software, all overseen by our in-house designers and naval architects.

Led by managing director Karen Underwood, Spirit Yachts comprises a world-class team of designers, naval architects, boat builders, finishers, cabinet makers, joiners and mechanical and engineering experts.
Having worked for high profile boat building companies for over twenty years, Karen has a wealth of experience in the yachting industry. Highly organised with a strong commercial instinct, Karen leads from the front, overseeing the running of the company and consistently delivering exceptional results.

As with anything you treasure or take pride in, a Spirit yacht requires a level of care. Similar to your home, your car or a piece of furniture, a yacht that is well maintained can be used regularly while continuing to look timelessly beautiful.
There is a common misconception that wooden yachts are high maintenance. Providing the right covers are used for the respective climate, the correct cleaning products are utilised throughout, and support from the Spirit yachts team is engaged, there is no reason for your yacht to be overly demanding or costly in her maintenance.
