MASTERS OF THE
A passionate lifelong sailor and skilled yacht designer, Sean McMillan founded Spirit Yachts in partnership with his friend Mick Newman in 1993. After thousands of sea miles delivering boats all around the globe, Sean and Mick had a clear vision: to build the most beautiful yachts that perform on the water.
Today, Spirit Yachts comprises a team of yacht design and build specialists from all over the world.
Based at waterside premises in Ipswich, Suffolk, Spirit Yachts designs and builds custom wooden sail and motor yachts for day sailing, performance racing, blue water cruising and occasionally a combination of all three. Every Spirit is unique.
By designing and building in-house, Spirit Yachts offers a collaborative approach that facilitates creativity and communication. The journey of a new project involves the yacht’s owner (or representative) from start to finish.
After establishing criteria for the yacht, hand-drawn designs evolve into flawless 3D concepts using state-of-the-art software, all overseen by Spirit’s in-house designers and naval architects.
From specialist engineers and electricians to the meticulous finishers, our world-class team maintains its passion for each project from beginning to end.
Spirit Yachts marries flawless craftsmanship with the latest materials and technology to create a bespoke yacht that performs on the water.
From high-efficiency deck equipment to sustainable solutions and luxurious interiors, Spirit Yachts delivers on the individual criteria for each yacht.
Using new techniques and modern technology, Spirit Yachts continues to innovate and challenge the preconceptions of wooden boat building.
“WE ARE CONSTANTLY PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES WHEN IT COMES TO TECHNOLOGY, DESIGN, AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS. ALWAYS WITH THE OWNER’S BRIEF FRONT OF MIND TO DELIVER ON THEIR DREAM.”
Led by managing director Karen Underwood, Spirit Yachts comprises a world-class team of designers, naval architects, boat builders, finishers, cabinet makers, joiners and mechanical and engineering experts.
Having worked for high profile boat building companies for over twenty years, Karen has a wealth of experience in the yachting industry. Highly organised with a strong commercial instinct, Karen leads from the front, overseeing the running of the company and consistently delivering exceptional results.
As with anything you treasure or take pride in, a Spirit yacht requires a level of care. Similar to your home, your car or a piece of furniture, a yacht that is well maintained can be used regularly while continuing to look timelessly beautiful.
There is a common misconception that wooden yachts are high maintenance. Providing the right covers are used for the respective climate, the correct cleaning products are utilised throughout, and support from the Spirit yachts team is engaged, there is no reason for your yacht to be overly demanding or costly in her maintenance.
