Spirit Yachts is recruiting to expand its in-house design team with a new naval architect and a junior designer.
Naval Architect
The aim of this role is to form an integral part of Spirit’s award-winning, in-house design team, providing technical information, calculations, and drawings, and assisting the creation of designs and construction drawings.
The role will require a flexible approach and ‘can do attitute’ to building in timber with carbon lamininate. Time management is key to meeting the deadlines and completion of tasks whilst adhering to industry legislation and compliance.
The key responsibilities are:
o Preliminary boat designs including General Arrangements, Machinery Arrangements, Deck Layouts, Sail Plans, Weight Studies, Trim Analysis, and Construction Design
o Structural review calculations & analysis, stability, performance reviews
o Produce weight and loading condition studies
o Specify all structural elements and undertake load and stress calculations
o Develop rig, foil, propulsion, steering and system designs
o To liaise wth governing bodies to ensure vessels comply with regulations such as the essential safety requirements of ‘Directive 2013/53/EU (Recreational Craft Directive)
o Ensure compliance with international regulations and classification society standards such as MCA, RINA, Lloyds Register
o Assist with all aspects of design and functionality of the design department
o Mentor members of the team as and when required encouraging growth within the department
o Consider environmental and sustainability impact at each stage of the design and build process.
Experience required:
o Degree in Naval Architecture or equivalent
o Minimum 2 years experience in a similar role
o Previous experience or knowledge of working with wooden yachts
o Understanding cold moulding and laminated frames
o Experience of sailing
o Knowledge of the relevant ISO standards to meet the requirements of the RCD
o Knowledge of Autocad, Inventor, Delftship and Office software
Junior Designer
Assist the Design Team, with day-to-day tasks whilst progressing self-development, with a view to taking design responsibility of selected areas of a vessel in production to include helping with new yacht designs and refit yachts.
The key responsibilities are:
o Responsible for design works to include working alongside the Naval Architect & Lead Designer on the below:
– Hull Design
– Coachroof
– Deck systems
– Cockpit
– Hatches
– External furniture
– Passerelle systems
o To assist in the detailed design of all yachts in production to the required standards
o To produce drawings for production/shop floor/suppliers/external design houses
o To print and distribute drawings as and when required
o To produce 3D models of components
o To develop Owners’ Manuals and maintenance logs for vessels prior to handover
o Assist in general duties relating to the production and testing of vessels
o To improve and update the BOM documentation
o To attend systems meetings with engineering and electrical departments
o Deck plan design and hardware specification
o Assist with commissioning and yard teams during busy periods of handover and sea trials
o Build strong client and supplier relationships
o To assist with IRC/ORC certification and endorsement when required
o To join delivery trips and regattas when required
o Increase efficiencies within the design department
o Increase knowledge of construction techniques, materials, sailing systems and design software
o Consider environmental and sustainability impact at each stage of the design and build process
